- Why do you share your outfits? And why Instagram?
I started Instagram a few years ago as break from studying. I initially used it to follow some brands that I enjoyed, but I quickly found a tight knit community who had similar interests and it’s been a great, guilty pleasure ever since. Sharing outfits has helped me develop my own style, and learn and get inspired by others. It has also been a great way to hone my photography skills, plus learning about light and composition has changed the way I approach things.
- What makes your Instagram feed so special?
I am not sure what is special about my feed, other than my inclination for footwear. I am particularly drawn into textures, lighting, and mood, and I hope I am able to convey that through my feed.
- Where does your inspiration come from?
No surprises here, I usually draw inspiration from my everyday life. Things that I see around me, whether it is a certain light or detail that catches my eye is what helps me think of potential compositions that I find interesting. Other than that, there is so much to get inspired from by the Instagram community.
- Where does your love for denim come from? When did it start?
I enjoy the utilitarianism in denim, along with boots and other workwear silhouettes. Everything serves a purpose. It’s easy to pair in any varying combination, and each object is functional without being too flashy. Of course, I love the unique character that develops and the story each piece of denim can tell. My interest in denim started fairly recently, around 5 years ago with a pair of RRL slim fit Japanese denim.
- Your top 3 favorite (denim)brands?
3sixteen – A brand that had its start in denim but has a great selection of shirts, chinos, and jackets. The reason why they are my favorite is their commitment to shopping local and their relationship to and with small businesses. They always encourage customers to find local shops to obtain their newest releases, and wait before releasing pieces on their own online website. In addition, their fits work so well for me. Plus they have awesome collaborations with so many great retailers and companies.
Pure Blue Japan – Texture is everything when I think of this brand. I am currently working on a pair of XX-013 that I picked up from Luke at Mildblend, and it just wears so easily straight from the start.
Rogue Territory – They have great denim options, in a variety of textures and some modern fits. I like their commitment and communication with their customers, and I also appreciate their history and growth through the years.
6. What is your favorite accessory?
My favorite accessory that I can never go without is a watch. I recently started reading up on automatic watches and more recently vintage watches. I have a small collection thus far, but one that serves its purpose for any situation. My favorite everyday watch is my Tudor Heritage Black Bay, which has vintage-styled details and just looks great with everything.
7. What items do you wear the most at the moment?
In terms of clothes, I usually gravitate to what is easy to throw on in the morning. Lately, I have been going for a simple tee shirt from Reigning Champ, 3sixteen, or Gustin. I usually layer with simple workshirt or button down from the likes of 3sixteen, Rogue Territory, or Gitman Vintage. For denim, I have been wearing my 3sixteen ST-100xk and PBJ XX-013 simply because these are the pairs that I have been working on. All are easy to mix and match. For boot/shoes, I have so many choices to choose from everyday. A safe bet is either my Viberg service boots or Alden plain toe boots. Comfort is key and both brands fit that criteria.
- What is your favorite shop? And what is your favorite webstore?
My favorite shop is Mildblend Supply Company in Chicago. It is the closest shop near me, and the owner Luke is awesome and down to earth. They offer such a huge variety of brands, denim, and clothing in general. They also have a great variety of footwear from the likes of Alden, Wolverine, Oak Street, and Truman. Plus their staff is so knowledgeable, and they offer denim services such as repair and hemming.
My favorite webstore is Lost + Found. The store was more of a recent discovery, but I love everything about the store. From the brands they offer, their aesthetic, and the fun little graphics they use in their emails. They offer a great variety of footwear such as Alden, Trickers, and Viberg, a huge variety of apparel from brands in the United States and Japan, and even sportswear.
- Do you care about the production process?
I think those with a mutual interest in raw denim do inherently care about the steps that go into making their favorite pair of denim. Many of the brands that I love, are small operations that produce their clothing in small batches. The details that go into my favorite pairs of denim often times are hard to produce in fast fashion production. For me personally, I appreciate knowing the time and care taken to produce my favorite garments.
- What are your dreams for the future?
I am currently a fourth year medical student applying for internal medicine residency. My hope for the future is to be able to practice internal medicine in a large academic center, and continue my interest in hospitalist medicine or hematology/oncology. I love learning and hope to take part in teaching medical students or residents in the future. If only I could wear denim while in the hospital…
