Greetings, my name is Mike and I live in Tokyo. I moved to Japan a little over 4 years ago to be closer to the denim industry. I also wanted to learn to speak a foreign language. I love art and all things indigo. I have a really cool dog named Smokey that tags along with me on my adventures around town.
Why do you share your outfits? And why Instagram?
Some people paint pictures, some people write songs, some people make jeans. It’s all art. I love art and I love looking at jeans J Instagram has been great in that regard. There are so many people from around the world sharing so many beautiful photos.
What makes your Instagram feed so special?
I don’t think it’s special but I do try to post little videos from time to time showing some of the shops around Japan. You can usually see those in my stories feed.
Where does your inspiration come from?
These days I find inspiration from all of the people I follow on Instagram.
Where does your love for denim come from? When did it start?
Jeans have always been a staple in my wardrobe but I specifically remember discovering Nudie jeans back in 2005. I was in university and a local shop started selling them. I bought a pair and I was instantly hooked on raw denim.
Your top 3 favorite (denim)brands?
Pure Blue Japan – The fabrics are beautiful and full of texture. The company is passionate about what they do and it shows in the construction. I love everything they do!
Nine Lives – These guys are making some of the best clothes I have ever seen. The cuts are perfect and the fabrics are amazing. You can’t find a cooler brand.
Ues Clothing – I really love this brand. They really make some of the best products coming out of Japan.
6. What is your favorite accessory?
Can my dog be an accessory? I usually have him with me when I am out. If that answer doesn’t count then I’ll say bracelets.
7. What items do you wear the most at the moment?
At the moment am really enjoying my Nine Lives Jeans. The fit is great and the greencast denim ages wonderfully. I have never bought the same pair of jeans twice before but I’ll definitely buy these again.
What is your favorite shop? And what is your favorite webstore?
There are so many great shops in Tokyo. I love so many for different reasons. I don’t buy anything online but I do often visit the Okayama Denim office in Shibuya. The guys are great and super knowledgeable. In the US I really like Standard and Strange. It’s a great shop with great people.
Do you care about the production process?
Absolutely! I care about every step of production. I want to know who’s making the garments I buy and where the materials are coming from. I want to feel a connection to the products.
What are your dreams for the future?
I want to learn as much as I can and share that knowledge with as many people as I can.
