The Collaboration Of Our Dreams: Zanter × Robin Denim
A few weeks ago, we traveled to Japan, a fascinating country in countless ways and the promised land of denim. While in the country, we seized the opportunity to explore some of the country’s denim stores. We met inspiring brand founders and talked denim with passionate denimheads who we have been admiring from afar for years. Japan’s denim culture, built on years of refinement and craftsmanship, is unique to the islands. It just can’t be found anywhere else. Our journey not only fueled our love for Japanese denim, it also reignited our admiration for the people and culture of Japan.
Our main reason to head to Japan, though, wasn’t really related to denim. Behind the scenes, we’ve been working on a colllaboration with a Japanese brand for the past few years. We travelled to Japan primarily to meet the guys of Zanter, Japan’s oldest down jacket manufacturer, to discuss the final details of our collaboration—a down jacket the likes of which the world has never seen. We wanted to play a hands-on role in the collaboration, so we met with the good people at Zanter and worked out some of the fine details that needed to be in place before we could produce a sample.

Zanter: A Long and Rich History
Founded in 1951 in post-war Japan as a family business, Zanter set out to develop cold-weather down sleeping bags and moutaineering gear. They were Japan’s first downwear manufacturer, and their quality was recognized quickly. A short five years later, the brand began supplying down jackets and equipment to Japan’s Antarctic Research Expedition ahead of their successful expedition to Nepal’s Mount Manaslu (one of the first Japanese expeditions to the Himalayas).
In the years that followed, Zanter supported major alpine and polar expeditions, continuing to build its reputation as a pioneer in high-performance downwear. From 1973, the brand began diversifying into broader outdoor and lifestyle collections while maintaining its technical heritage. In the years that followed, the brand continues to craft premium down jackets with 800+ fill-power insulation, while emphasizing “Made in Japan” construction, sustainability, and refined urban styling. They grew as a brand, but without compromising on functional innovation and Japanese craftsmanship, and without selling out (they are still owned by the same family that started the brand 74 years ago).
Today, Zanter doesn’t just make some of the best-looking down jackets out there, they craft pieces of exceptional quality, backed by a long and storied heritage. We’ve been admirers of the brand for years. If Zanter is a new name for you, you’ll quickly see why we are so excited about this collaboration.

Visiting Zanter in Yokohama, Japan
All our past collaborations have been built on strong relationships and a shared passion. While it’s easy to put a collab patch on a product, it doesn’t feel right to us unless we’ve poured our soul into the product. This was reason enough to visit the Zanter factory in Yokohama and to get involved in a big way in the production of the sample.
While staying in Tokyo, we took a 30-minute train ride south to Yokohama, Japan’s second-largest city. We hadn’t seen any photos or videos of the factory, so we tried to imagine it before we arrived. Disembarking in Yokohama, we made our way to the door of a small-scale factory tucked away in a quiet industrial neighborhood. Stepping through the entrance, we found a serene, spotless, and highly organized workspace. No chaos, no loud noises, just a peaceful environment where some of Japan’s finest down jackets are crafted. It was exactly as we’d pictured it! It was everything we’d hoped it would be.

The Zanter Archive
Before going into details of the collaboration and the production process, we sat down with the owners of the brand to get to know more about the brand and their rich history. They prepared a table full of photos and newspaper clippings that, together with vintage examples from the brand’s archives, gave us a clear picture of the brand’s early days and how they built the reputation they enjoy today. The owners took their time walking us through the brand’s journey, taking us from the start of the brand in 1951 right up to today, sharing photographs and samples from different eras. They even let us try on one of the original pieces from the early days of the brand, a jacket [BS1] that had actually made the trek to the peaks of the Himalayas. The Zanter archive was an experience that alone made the long flight worthwhile.

The Sample Production
After exploring the archive, we made our way through the factory, following the exact path a jacket takes during production. From the design table to the sewing machines, through the down-filling process, and finally to the finishing touches. To fully get to understand the time-consuming process and its complexity, we participated in making the first collaboration sample. Under the team’s supervision, we rolled up our sleeves and started working on the sample of the jacket.
We stitched the different parts of the jacket separately and filled them with down. Each part required exactly 30 grams of down. We filled a bucket, thinking it was 30 grams, only to find out it that a bucketful of down was only 7 grams. After carefully weighing and filling each part with down, we moved on to assembling the jacket. We left most of the stitching to the experienced craftswoman and her nimble fingers. When she was done, we moved on to the final steps: adding the crucial and unique collaboration detail, the rivets!
While we have some experience making jeans, this was on an entirely different level. Our work was miles away from the work of the factory employees. It was good enough for the sampple, but we were happy that production of the finished products would be handled by the experts.

The Zanter x Robin Denim Indigo Down Jacket: Unique Features
We teamed up with Zanter Japan to make an exclusive down jacket, the likes of which the world has never seen. We wanted to combine the unique features and high quality Zanter is known for with our shared love for denim and indigo.
For our collaboration, we started at familiar basecamp: Zanter’s 6720: JP-Original Down jacket. This model provides an excellent combination of warmth, comfort, and stylishness, and it is a joy to wear. It has multiple pockets that perfectly balance functionality and style. The standout feature of the Zanter x Robin Denim Indigo Down jacket is its fabric. We sourced a unique indigo-dyed technical outerwear material that’s both windproof and waterproof—the perfect shell for the colder, wetter months ahead. It has a unique dark indigo blue shade that will, in time, fade just like a pair of jeans! Honestly, we were blown away by the beauty of the fabric. I mean, have you ever seen an indigo-dyed down parka before?

The Collaboration Of Our Dreams
Collaborating with Zanter Japan is a dream in itself. When they approached us for a special, limited-edition project, we didn’t hesitate for a second. As the details of the jacket came together, it quickly became clear that this collaboration was going to be something truly special—something we could all be intensely proud of. After visiting the factory and meeting the team behind Zanter several times in the past few years, we can honestly say that this collaboration is built on friendship, a shared passion, and hard work.
